The Beginning

Skate for Justice 2004 began at 9:57AM with nine skaters and a single cyclist, Bikah Daigle.

These pictures come from Route 12 and the turn onto 79.

The Kenyon  (8.6 Miles, 10:43)

The Justice Skaters took their first rest at Charlotte Kenyon Elementary School, briefly eating protein bars and replacing faulty radios.

Nicki from New Jersey cast aside her skates and donned a bicycle at this point.

Whitney Point (18.5 Miles, 12:14)

The Justice Skaters took a second rest at the Big M in Whitney Point.

A short meeting assembled to discuss the skating line.

Technical difficulties associated with the webcast were addressed at this point.

The move toward Lisle

The Skaters passed I-81 uneventfully.

The new line strategy proved difficult to implement, and the line continued to fragment through Lisle.

Josiah Stevens encountered a brief difficulty with a rear wheel axle, but was able to fix it and move on.

Whipping Waters  (21.2 Miles, 13:41)

The stop at the Lisle Spring was shorter this year than in previous years, and the entire Justice Team had to board vehicles to cross the nearly two miles of construction following it.

Into Tioga County (28.5 Miles, 14:30)

The line continued to move slowly and fragment frequently into Tioga County.

Two falls occurred during the two descents at this point, resulting in an injury that ended Lana Herman's day of skating.

The No-Skate Hill (29.6 Miles, (15:17)

As always, the skaters took off their skates and walked up this mighty climb.

Preparing for Richford Hill

The Skaters took a long break after the long march.

A strategy meeting conveined to talk about the hill ahead, and it was decided that only Sean Nosky, Tom Angell, Justin Rueffer, and Josiah Stevens would attempt this dangerous descent.

Richford Hill (30.7 Miles, 15:41)

A truly beautiful descent.  The skaters managed to control their speed and keep it under 25 MPH on this terrifying hill.  The level of control and communication was unprecedented in the Skate for Justice.

Resting In Richford (31.5 Miles, 15:53-16:44)

The skaters rested for nearly an hour at Richford's dairy treat, where they enjoyed lunch and ice cream.

The great climb toward Caroline (36.4 Miles, 17:33)

After the long rest in Richford, the line strategy finally began to take hold and the Justice Skaters began moving quickly and efficiently.

Skaters Beware (42.2 Miles, 15:48)

The skaters crossed the points where Justin Holmes suffered a puncture wound in SFJ 2002 and where Tom Angell took his last stride in SFJ 2003.  Both points were passed uneventfully.

The Arrival in Ithaca (48.9 Miles, 18:25)

The Skaters arrived at the City of Ithaca Sign, the end of the Skate for Justice, 8 hours and 28 minutes after they began.   Six Skaters finished the entire distance: Sean Nosky, Noel Marandola, Tom Angell, Jon Perri, Justin Rueffer, and Josiah Stevens.  Great job skaters!
